Notes on Civil Rights Movement: 2/28/11- The Little Rock students (Segregation)
  • Children's March - media attention/mobilizing others.
  • Freedom Riders - mobilzing
  • Boycotts of city buses in Mogometry
  • This started from a small group, then got media attention through Children's March, and used some violence by burning buses. This was a grassroot advocay example because they've protested, and as well done many boycotts, and there has been many speeches.

Do now: What project team are you in and why did you pick it? (3/18/11)
A: I picked D- Media Attention. Mainly because as a creative person, I like to come up with ideas for certain topics. Like this topic, I'd prefer getting the media's attention by having a video presentation which will hopefully, get the audience/crowd to actually think about the safety of school and how safe everyone really is.

Smart Plan/Goals
  • We should be able to have some sort of security protection. First we need to consult with Mr. Brown and notify him of this issue. Something that we can do is to raise awareness and let students understand this issue. Upon the actions that can be taken : Having certain doors open at certain hours, have security cameras, and have every visitor have some kind of ID- name tag. If this is an issue, we can possibly ask about fundings that is available to MHS (in one of link above). Due to the time that we have left for this generation citizen project along with the recylcing issue, we should spilt up in groups for each of this actions. Group one can notify Mr. Brown. Group 2 can ask students, for surveys, and somehow connect with students and raise awareness. Group 3 can research if we already have the fundings. As for recycling, everyone can participate, and ask if every teacher can have some kind of recycling bin, and each week, assigned groups can pick it up and sort into recycling piles.

Do now: 4/4/11 - What do you want changed by our Generation Citizen projects?
With the school's safety, I think we should change upon which doors should be accessible, because at any moment, strangers can come in and threaten students and faculties. Also, we should have some kind of button that may allow access based on identity/visitors. Also, we need to go over procedures in case of some kind of attack, because some teachers doesn't even know

List some possible solutions to our focus issue:
  1. For recycling, we can create a club for volunteering and have students recycle for a cause, and to keep them motivated we can have it count as hours for community service.
  2. For security, we should have visitors check in when visiting.
  3. Request teachers to have more recycling bins.
